Winter Driving Tips for Somerset and the Mendip Hills

Winter Driving Tips for Somerset and the Mendip Hills

Somerset winters may not bring Scandinavian snowfall, but the Mendip Hills regularly see frost, ice, and occasional snow that catches drivers off guard. If you drive through the Gorge, over Priddy, or any of the elevated rural roads, winter preparation is essential.

Winter driving conditions in the Mendips

Check Your Tyres

Tyres are your only contact with the road – and that matters most when grip is compromised.

  • Tread depth: 3mm is the recommended minimum for winter – more than the 1.6mm legal limit
  • Tyre pressure: Cold weather drops tyre pressure. Check weekly during winter months
  • Consider winter tyres: If you regularly drive the Mendips, winter or all-season tyres provide significantly better grip below 7°C
  • Age matters: Rubber hardens with age, reducing grip. Tyres over 5 years old may struggle in cold conditions

Battery Health

Cold weather is brutal on car batteries. A battery that was marginal in summer may fail entirely when temperatures drop.

  • Warning signs: Slow cranking, dim lights, or needing to try multiple times to start
  • Testing: We can test battery health in minutes – a simple check that prevents being stranded
  • Age: Most batteries last 3-5 years. If yours is older, consider preemptive replacement

Visibility and Lights

Winter days are short, and you'll be driving in the dark more often.

  • Check all lights: Headlights, brake lights, indicators – get someone to help you check
  • Clean headlights: Road grime dramatically reduces light output
  • Wipers and washer fluid: Replace worn wipers, and use winter-grade screenwash that won't freeze

Driving in Icy Conditions

When frost or ice is present:

  • Reduce speed: Stopping distances can be 10x longer on ice
  • Gentle inputs: Accelerate, brake, and steer smoothly – sudden movements cause skids
  • Higher gears: Use second gear to pull away, which reduces wheelspin
  • Leave gaps: Double your normal following distance
  • Watch for ice: Shaded areas, bridges, and elevated roads freeze first

Get Your Car Winter Ready

We offer a winter vehicle check covering tyres, battery, lights, and antifreeze levels. It takes about 20 minutes and could prevent a breakdown on a freezing morning.
