Why Tyre Pressure Matters More Than You Think

Why Tyre Pressure Matters More Than You Think

Tyre pressure is one of the simplest things to check, yet one of the most commonly neglected. Incorrect pressure doesn't just wear your tyres faster – it affects handling, braking, and fuel economy too.

Checking tyre pressure with a gauge

What Happens with Low Tyre Pressure?

  • Faster wear: Under-inflated tyres wear on the outer edges, reducing lifespan significantly
  • Higher fuel consumption: Soft tyres create more rolling resistance – you burn more fuel
  • Poor handling: The car feels vague and less responsive to steering inputs
  • Longer stopping distances: Less contact patch means less grip for braking
  • Increased blowout risk: Flexing sidewalls generate heat, which can cause sudden failure

What About Over-Inflation?

Too much pressure isn't better:

  • Uneven wear: Centre of the tread wears faster than the edges
  • Harsh ride: The tyre can't absorb bumps properly
  • Reduced grip: Less rubber in contact with the road
  • Increased damage risk: Harder tyres are more vulnerable to pothole damage

Finding the Right Pressure

The correct pressure for your car is found:

  • Inside the driver's door frame: A sticker shows pressures for different loads
  • In the fuel filler flap: Some cars put it here
  • In the owner's manual: Always lists recommended pressures

Note that front and rear pressures may differ, and fully loaded pressures are higher than normal. Don't just copy what's on the tyre sidewall – that's the maximum pressure, not the recommended pressure for your specific car.

How Often to Check

Check your tyre pressure:

  • At least monthly: Tyres naturally lose 1-2 psi per month
  • Before long journeys: Especially if carrying extra passengers or luggage
  • When temperature changes: Cold weather drops pressure; hot weather increases it
  • When the TPMS light comes on: If your car has tyre pressure monitoring

Check When Cold

Tyre pressure should be checked when tyres are cold – before you've driven more than a mile or two. Warm tyres show higher pressure, which can give a false reading.

Free tyre pressure checks are available at most petrol stations. Or pop into our Cheddar workshop – we're happy to check and adjust for you.
