Driving Through Cheddar Gorge: Tips for Visitors and Locals

Cheddar Gorge is one of the most dramatic roads in England – sheer cliffs, tight bends, and spectacular scenery. Whether you're a visitor or a local who drives it daily, here are some tips for navigating the B3135 safely.
Know the Road
The B3135 through the Gorge is:
- Single carriageway: Mostly one lane each way, with some very tight spots
- Speed limit: 30mph through the Gorge itself – and that's fast enough on some corners
- Steep gradient: Significant climbs and descents
- Blind corners: Many bends where you can't see what's coming
Watch for Hazards
Pedestrians: Tourists walk in the road, especially near the caves and ice cream shops. In summer, expect people everywhere.
Cyclists: Popular route for road cyclists, especially climbing up from Cheddar. Give them space.
Rocks: Occasionally, rocks fall from the cliffs. After heavy rain or frost, be extra aware.
Wildlife: Goats roam the cliff faces and sometimes wander onto the road.
Vehicle Preparation
The steep gradients work your brakes hard, especially descending with a full car. Make sure:
- Brakes are in good condition: Worn brakes fade on long descents
- Use engine braking: Select a lower gear to reduce brake wear
- Good tyres: Grip matters on the twisting bends
Alternative Routes
If you just need to get from Cheddar to Wells or Priddy, and it's peak tourist season, consider the back roads through Draycott or Westbury-sub-Mendip. They're often quicker and less stressful than queuing through the Gorge.
