Car Servicing: What Actually Gets Checked and Changed?

Regular servicing keeps your car reliable, safe, and economical. But what actually happens during a service? Understanding what's involved helps you know what you're paying for – and why it matters.

What's in a Basic Service?

A basic or interim service typically includes:

  • Oil and filter change: Fresh oil lubricates the engine and removes contaminants
  • Visual inspection: Checking for obvious issues like leaks, wear, or damage
  • Fluid top-ups: Screenwash, brake fluid, coolant, power steering fluid
  • Tyre check: Pressure adjustment and tread depth measurement
  • Lights check: All external lights tested

What's in a Full Service?

A full service includes everything above, plus:

  • Air filter replacement: Clean air is essential for efficient combustion
  • Fuel filter: Keeps debris out of the fuel system (on diesel vehicles especially)
  • Spark plugs: May be checked or replaced depending on mileage
  • Brake inspection: Measure pad and disc thickness, check for wear
  • Suspension check: Look for worn bushings, leaking shocks, loose components
  • Battery test: Check condition and charging system
  • Coolant system: Check antifreeze concentration and condition

Why Service Intervals Matter

Oil degrades over time, even if you don't drive much. Filters clog. Components wear. The service interval – typically 12 months or 10,000 miles – is designed to catch issues before they become problems.

Missed services can cause:

  • Engine wear from degraded oil
  • Poor fuel economy from dirty filters
  • Brake failures from unnoticed wear
  • Expensive repairs that could have been prevented
  • Reduced resale value – buyers check service history
